Rob Olney
Rob is an Aviation Safety Subject Matter Expert, having previously spent 7 years in the UK CAA within the senior leadership team, following 25 years in Army Aviation. Rob flew army helicopters, specialising in surveillance operations and working with a blend of security forces in various operational environments. In both the military and at the UK CAA, Rob has been instrumental in the development of strategy, regulation, policy and guidance, most recently with the UK CAA in Flight Operations, Aerodrome, Air Traffic Management, Airspace (AAA), and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). Until December 2023 he was Head of Safety and Business Delivery at the UK CAA, giving him a unique perspective and overview of safety across all the regulated entities in the UK aviation system.
Following the drone disruption at Gatwick in Dec 2019, Rob led the development of protocols for safely managing drone infringements at major aerodromes, which has now been adopted globally by ICAO. Whilst on the UK CAA senior leadership team, Rob has been integral to developing the RPAS team, its policies, procedures, consultation, and intelligence gained from the data analysis from regulatory oversight, occurrence reporting, and AAIB investigations. Rob led the AAA team responsible for the Airspace Change Process (CAP 1616) and was heavily involved in developing the Airspace Modernisation Strategy (AMS) and the Future of Flight Programme. He also chaired many cross-government / arm's length body boards, including the UK Health and Safety Regulators Network, Sustainability / Environmental, and Dangerous Goods / Lithium Batteries.
